6 competitor surfaces almost nobody checks
The public pages that leak more than a pricing table, and why they stay in the blind spot.
Everyone reads a competitor's pricing and homepage. These six overlooked public surfaces leak strategy, stack, and roadmap, and take a minute to check.
Ask ten people how they watch a competitor and nine will say the same three things: pricing page, homepage, LinkedIn. Those are the surfaces the competitor knows you're watching, so they're the ones they polish. The interesting tells live in the pages nobody thinks to open, the ones that get shipped by an engineer at 6pm and never reviewed by marketing.
Here are six of them. None require a login. Most take under a minute.
1. The sitemap.xml
A competitor's robots.txt tells you what they don't want indexed. The sitemap.xml tells you everything they do — every URL they consider worth ranking, often including pages that aren't linked from anywhere in the visible nav yet.
Skim it for new top-level sections. A /security, /partners, or /enterprise path appearing before there's a nav link to it is a section being built. A wave of new /blog or /compare URLs is a content push starting. The sitemap is the site's table of contents, and it updates before the site does. 2. The cookie-consent vendor list
Open the cookie banner and click "manage preferences." Most consent tools list every third-party script the site loads by name, grouped into analytics, marketing, and functional buckets. That list is a live inventory of a competitor's martech stack.
You'll see which analytics platform they run, whether they've added a new session-replay or A/B-testing tool, and when a heavyweight like a CDP or ABM vendor shows up, a sign they're investing in a motion, not just a page. It's the same instinct behind reading a subprocessor list to map the tech stack, just pulled from the front end instead of the legal page.
3. The security.txt file
Check /.well-known/security.txt. Plenty of B2B companies publish one now. It lists a security contact, a disclosure policy, sometimes a link to a bug-bounty program or a hall of fame.
The presence of a maturing one — a bounty link, a PGP key, a policy URL — tells you security is staffed and funded, which matters when you're selling against them into security-conscious buyers. Its sudden appearance often trails a SOC 2 push or an enterprise pivot. Absence is a tell too.
4. Open Graph tags
View the source of any key page and read the og:title and og:description meta tags. These are the words a competitor wants to appear when their page is pasted into Slack, LinkedIn, or a text message. It's their positioning, stripped of the design that softens it on the page itself.
Marketing often forgets these exist, so they lag the visible copy — which means the OG description sometimes shows you last quarter's positioning still frozen in the metadata. When the visible headline and the og:description disagree, you're watching a repositioning mid-flight.
5. The events and webinars page
/events, /webinars, or a resources filter usually lists what's coming up. This is where demand-gen spend becomes visible. A calendar filling with field events signals an enterprise sales motion. A run of "how to migrate from X" webinars names exactly who they're hunting.
Recurring co-hosted webinars reveal partnerships before any press release does. And a page that's gone stale — top event three months in the past — is a quiet sign the marketing team is stretched or shifting budget elsewhere.
6. The 404 page
Deliberately hit a URL that doesn't exist. The 404 page is the one surface no one A/B-tests, so it ages honestly. Sometimes it links to recently-killed pages. Sometimes the brand voice there is a version or two behind the homepage. Occasionally a broken internal link in the site points at a /product/[something] that 404s today — a feature page pulled, or one not shipped yet.
It's the smallest signal on this list and the one most likely to surprise you.
None of these are hard to check. The problem is remembering to, across a dozen competitors, on a cadence, forever. That's the part humans quietly stop doing by week three.
